At the opening day of President Donald Trump’s inaugural overseas tour, both nations signed an historic arms deal worth $142 billion to strengthen Saudi military capabilities and deepen strategic ties.
This historic arms package, part of a larger $350 billion economic and defense partnership over 10 years, includes advanced weapon systems, military training programs and maintenance support services. President Trump attended a ceremonial event held in Riyadh for formalization.
The White House described the arms deal as an expansion of their security relationship, noting its likely positive effects on counterterrorism cooperation and regional defense readiness, particularly with increasing tensions with Iran.
“This massive investment in American defense manufacturing will create jobs and strengthen our allies in the Gulf,” President Trump stated at the signing ceremony. It sends a strong signal that America stands united against our common enemies.
Key components of this agreement include Patriot missile systems, tanks, combat ships, precision-guided munitions and command and control technologies. Furthermore, new training programs have also been established by American defense contractors and advisors for Saudi forces.
This arms deal represents a historic turning point in U.S. foreign policy and signaled Trump’s preference for strengthening ties with Gulf Arab allies. Additionally, it aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan which aims to modernize military and diversify economy beyond oil dependency.
Critics have raised concern over the implications of this deal for human rights and Yemen’s ongoing civil war, where Saudi-led coalition airstrikes have drawn international condemnation. Human rights organizations warn that increased weapon sales could fuel regional instability and civilian deaths.
Though some concerns were expressed regarding this agreement, both governments responded positively. Saudi officials hailed it as a turning point in bilateral ties; Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir stated: “Today marks an historic day in U.S.-Saudi relations; one which will lead to increased security and economic prosperity for both of our nations.
This agreement represents one of President Donald Trump’s first significant diplomatic successes as president and underscores his administration’s dedication to building alliances through economic and military cooperation. Trump will use his trip, which also includes visits to Israel, Vatican City and NATO headquarters, as an opportunity to showcase his global leadership skills.
