Recent reports about former President Donald Trump’s reported plan to let Russia retain control of most of the territory it has taken from Ukraine since 2014 have caused alarm among key NATO allies, who are deeply worried over this development.

Trump first suggested his plan during a closed-door meeting with advisers and later mentioned it during media interviews, suggesting a novel way of ending Ukraine’s civil war: pressuring Kyiv to cede large areas occupied by Russia–such as Crimea and significant parts of eastern Ukraine–in exchange for a ceasefire or peace accord from Moscow.

European leaders were quick to express their concern. Germany, France, and Poland in particular were quick to voice their objection. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called it a dangerous concession that legitimizes aggression while setting an “extremely dangerous precedent for global security”. President of France Emmanuel Macron raised this matter with U.S. diplomats, emphasizing its significance as part of European peace and stability.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also voiced his opinion, asserting: “Peace cannot come at the cost of justice. Any agreement rewarding illegal occupation would undermine international law and embolden future aggressors.”

Trump, widely expected to be the Republican frontrunner in 2024 presidential elections, has frequently lambasted Biden administration’s handling of Ukraine war and claimed he could “end it in 24 hours” if elected president again. Unfortunately, however, his recent remarks have raised new fears among U.S. allies that America might back away from longstanding support of Ukraine and NATO unity.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded strongly to Trump’s statements by rejecting any concept of territorial compromise: “Ukraine will never trade land for peace,” he declared in a video address. He further added, “This war is about principles like sovereignty, freedom and international law and should not only focus on borders.”

Analysts caution that any attempt at forcing Ukraine into an unfavorable settlement could destabilize the region and undermine Western alliances. “Signaling that America may abandon Ukraine’s territorial claims could fracture NATO and embolden autocrats around the globe,” warned former National Security Council official Fiona Hill.

The Biden administration has not directly responded to Trump’s proposal; however, senior officials reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As the war enters its third year, Trump’s comments may become an issue in the coming presidential campaign, possibly altering Washington’s foreign policy stance depending on who wins the vote.
