Former U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing back against allegations linking him to a lewd birthday note found among documents associated with Jeffrey Epstein, a late financier and convicted sexual offender who passed away earlier this month. The handwritten message, purportedly addressed to Epstein himself, has gone viral online prompting Trump to deny authorship of it and ask that all related court materials be made immediately and fully public in order to clear his name.
Controversy began after court filings from Ghislaine Maxwell’s defamation case revealed a copy of an anonymous note signed “Donald,” purporting to come from him during early 1990s birthday greetings sent directly to Epstein from Trump himself. Trump has categorically disproved any suggestion that this message came from him, calling it an “absurd fabrication”.
Trump claimed in an open post on Truth Social that he never sent such correspondence to Epstein and that this is simply another attempt by radical leftists and their media partners to defame and distract from the truth. Release all papers so the entire world may witness it for themselves.”
Trump’s legal team is reported to be preparing a motion to intervene in the ongoing litigation surrounding Epstein documents and any mentions of him, such as socially meeting Epstein “decades ago,” before they become public. A spokesperson for him noted this limited relationship had come to an end over time.
Trump has often been linked to Epstein’s network of powerful associates; however, to date no criminal charges or direct allegations of misconduct against him in relation to Epstein’s criminal activities. Instead, in prior interviews and statements he has maintained that he “was never a fan” of Epstein and banned him from Mar-a-Lago “long before anyone else took any action”.
Legal experts say the note’s appearance in court filings doesn’t indicate wrongdoing, but its sensational language and context has generated much speculation.
Legal analyst Deborah Klein from Georgetown Law warned of a high-stakes situation. When public figures are named or even mentioned indirectly in documents related to someone like Epstein, even when those references may only be peripheral or unverified, their inclusion can become politically and reputationally explosive.
Trump’s renewed focus comes in tandem with an initiative to unseal thousands of pages tied to Epstein’s alleged sex-trafficking ring and its connections with celebrities, politicians, and royalty. A federal judge is currently reviewing motions from media organizations and advocacy groups demanding transparency while several individuals named in documents have filed motions with him or her asking to have their names blocked out or redacted from them.
Trump continues to portray this controversy as part of an elaborate scheme designed to damage his 2024 presidential bid.
Trump stated, “They are trying to drag me into things I had nothing to do with.” If there’s nothing to hide, all Epstein files should be released en masse rather than piecemeal.
The court is expected to make its ruling regarding the next batch of documents to be released this summer.
