KYIV, Ukraine – In one of Russia’s largest aerial assaults since starting its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia launched an unprecedented coordinated missile and drone assault on Kyiv during early hours on Friday morning, sending shockwaves through the city and sparking fears of renewed escalation.
Ukrainian authorities confirmed that several cruise missiles and Iranian-made Shahed drones were launched toward Kiev and nearby regions around midnight, using Western-supplied air defense systems such as NASAMS and Patriot missiles to intercept most aerial threats. Although most aerial threats were intercepted successfully, several explosions were heard throughout several districts and debris caused fires or infrastructure damage as a result of them falling onto cities and regions nearby.
“Kyiv has not experienced such an intense bombardment for several months,” stated Serhiy Popko, Head of Kyiv City Military Administration. Our defense systems responded effectively, though some damage from falling debris occurred including fires in residential and industrial zones. Our systems defended effectively.”
At least 17 people, including three children, were injured by debris or shockwaves from this disaster, according to Ukraine State Emergency Service reports. Emergency responders worked through the night extinguishing fires and clearing affected areas; several residential buildings, power substations, and warehouse facilities were hit with debris or shockwaves from these incidents.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned Moscow’s attempt to break Ukraine’s spirit of resistance in a video address by terrorizing us in our sleep; “they try terrorizing us but we remain strong. Kyiv stands and Ukraine stands,” Zelenskyy said.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense has yet to comment on the scope of the operation; however, state media outlets in Russia have suggested it was in retaliation for recent Ukrainian strikes on key infrastructure in Crimea and surrounding border regions such as Belgorod.
Military analysts view Russia’s latest assault as part of its shifting strategy ahead of Ukraine’s anticipated summer counteroffensive. Oleksiy Melnyk, an expert from Kyiv’s Razumkov Centre said “these aerial attacks are designed to exhaust Ukrainian air defenses while disrupting logistics and morale ahead of any large-scale battlefield movements”.
This attack comes amid diplomatic tensions as peace negotiations remain stagnant and both sides increase military pressure. European Union officials were outraged over this renewed bombardment; Josep Borrell, EU Foreign Policy Chief declared: “Targeting civilians and critical infrastructure constitutes a violation of international law and Russia must be held accountable.
United States President Donald Trump reiterated Washington’s strong backing of Ukraine, with the Pentagon announcing additional air defense support such as another Patriot battery and interceptor missiles, while also emphasizing his commitment to Kyiv’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Residents of Kyiv, used to occasional air raid alerts, described the night as both terrifying and relentless. Many spent time sheltering in metro stations or underground shelters for hours at a time – many including 34-year-old teacher Kateryna Holovko sheltered with her two children at one such site for hours on end. “It felt like our city was under siege again,” according to Kateryna Holovko who felt as if her children were under attack from air strikes.
As dawn broke on Kiev, recovery efforts intensified immediately. Air raid alerts remained active all day as Ukrainian authorities issued warnings of possible follow-up attacks.
Russia’s renewed aggression demonstrates the unpredictable and volatile nature of an already volatile conflict now in its third year. While Ukraine continues to receive support from Western powers, Russian assaults emphasize the necessity for international diplomacy–and defense reinforcements–in response.
