Islamabad, May 7, 2025 – Pakistan’s Armed Forces launched what officials have characterized as one of the most significant military responses ever in recent memory on Tuesday when they launched retaliatory strikes across the Line of Control (LoC), downing five Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets and targeting several strategic military installations within Indian-administered Kashmir.
Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) released a statement detailing this military action as a response to what they considered “unprovoked aggression” by Indian forces that resulted in civilian casualties near the border earlier this week. These coordinated and precision strikes caused multiple Indian checkposts and a brigade-level headquarters to be destroyed, according to ISPR’s account.
ISPR reported: “During this operation, five IAF fighter jets were intercepted and shot down while multiple forward operating bases, logistic points, and command posts were successfully neutralized – showing Pakistan’s response as proportionate, targeted, and sending a clear message that we won’t tolerate hostilities.”
Witness reports from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) border regions confirmed hearing multiple explosions and aerial activity throughout Monday night, as well as residents reporting ground tremors and heavy artillery exchange beginning early Tuesday morning.
India has yet to formally respond to these allegations, though local Indian media reports indicate heightened military activity in Jammu and Kashmir, with several emergency protocols being activated across northern commands. There have been no casualty figures or details released by India’s Ministry of Defence at the time of writing.
International observers have strongly urged both nuclear-armed neighbors to act with restraint. The UN called for “immediate de-escalation and dialogue,” noting the potential destabilizing impacts further escalation could have on regional peace. Both the US and China issued statements encouraging both parties to avoid military confrontation and return to diplomatic channels as soon as possible.
This development marks a sharp escalation in tensions between South Asian rivals India and Pakistan, who have engaged in multiple wars since gaining independence in 1947. Cross-border skirmishes along the LoC have often been an area of contention; however, full-scale aerial engagements such as that seen at Pulwama-Balakot in 2019 have become relatively rare events.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister made a public address later on Tuesday and assured the nation, saying that while his nation does not seek war, they would respond decisively to any act of aggression by any entity that seeks to threaten our sovereignty or safety of its citizens. “
Situation remains fluid with both sides remaining vigilant. Further updates should become available from both governments as more information becomes available.
