Kyiv, Ukraine — July 10, 2025 — Ukraine’s capital experienced one of the deadliest aerial attacks in recent memory early Wednesday morning, as Russian forces unleashed a devastating barrage of drones and missiles which struck residential neighborhoods, infrastructure facilities and public buildings across Kyiv – killing at least 17 people while also injuring many more – leaving entire sections smoldering ruins in their wake.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched over 40 drones and 12 missiles against Kiev from Russian territory, though most projectiles were intercepted by air defense systems; some projectiles managed to penetrate city defenses and cause fatalities as well as severe structural damage across at least three districts.
“This attack was an unprecedented, coordinated assault – an ugly reminder that civilians still face grave danger,” stated Serhiy Popko, Head of Kyiv Military Administration. The enemy targeted residential buildings, emergency response infrastructure and even a children’s hospital with their attacks.
Images from the scene showed apartment buildings with collapsed facades, burnt-out cars and emergency crews pulling survivors from debris in Shevchenkivskyi and Solomianskyi districts of Kiev. One missile strike hit a popular public park during morning rush hours killing several people and injuring several children, as well as multiple adults who died as a result of this event.
Volodymyr Zelensky strongly denounced the attack as yet another act of war by Russia, promising that Ukrainians would respond with strength, unity, and justice.
“We will not be broken,” Zelensky declared in his televised address. “Each strike only strengthens our resolve; the world must witness this cruelty and take appropriate actions.”
This attack took place days after NATO leaders pledged their continued support for Ukraine at their summit in Washington, and analysts believe its timing was intentional to test Ukrainian air defenses while further fuelling debate about military aid and escalation.
Emergency services worked to contain fires, rescue survivors and provide medical aid during a morning of unrest in Kyiv. Hospitals throughout the capital were put on high alert while Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared July 10 as a day of mourning, urging residents to remain vigilant and shelter in place when sirens sound.
“This conflict isn’t simply military in nature; it threatens our right to live freely in our homes,” Klitschko stated.
Ukraine air defense forces claimed to have shot down 32 Shahed-136 drones and seven Kalibr cruise missiles, but at least five missile impacts were verified within city limits. Authorities believe the pattern of attacks suggests an attempt at overpowering air defenses using both high-speed missiles and slower drones with differing flight paths.
International reaction was swift: European Union, United States and United Nations leaders all condemned the strike, calling it a violation of international law and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken characterized it as “cowardly act of terror targeting civilians.”
As rescue efforts continue in Kyiv, residents are being reminded of their fragile security situation more than two years since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Today’s events triggered memories of earlier stages of this conflict for many individuals who experienced fear and trauma first-hand.
Olena, a teacher living in central Kyiv, was just getting ready for work when an explosion rocked their building and killed several children inside it. “Now all I can think about is being thankful my children are alive – but how long can this continue?”
Ukraine’s military recently stated its intent to enhance air defense capabilities, seeking faster delivery of promised systems from Western allies. Residents throughout Kyiv brace for future attacks knowing the threat from war may lie far away – yet still remains ever present at home.
