New York City – July 29 2025 — A tragic shooting at an office building in Midtown Manhattan Tuesday morning resulted in four people, including an experienced police officer, being fatally shot. This event sent shockwaves through the city and has raised serious questions regarding workplace security and mental health awareness.
Authorities reported gunfire began erupting around 10:45 a.m. on the 17th floor of Wyndham Tower near 6th Avenue and West 45th Street, housing several corporate offices as well as coworking spaces. Emergency services responded to several 911 calls reporting active gunfire.
NYPD Commissioner Lisa Harrington reported that officers arrived within minutes and found an chaotic scene – with shots still being fired when they reached it – where one of their own was tragically fatally wounded while trying to de-escalate it.
Detective Michael Russo was identified as 42-year-old Detective from Midtown Precinct Special Response Unit who had served 17 years with the NYPD and received multiple commendations during that time. Commissioner Harrington called him an honorable individual whose “heroic legacy and legacy live on in death”.
Detective Russo was among three civilians fatalities, as well as the suspect shooter himself, including three civilians including himself. Police believe the suspected gunman to be a 38-year-old former employee from a digital marketing firm located within the building who had recently been let go due to behavioral issues; among these victims were also an executive from said firm and an out of town client visiting for business reasons.
“Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was targeted,” according to Chief of Detectives Miguel Alvarez. The gunman entered with a concealed weapon, confronted his former manager and opened fire – likely out of anger or revenge related motivations; though all details are yet to be clarified by authorities.
SWAT teams quickly cleared out the building floor by floor while paramedics treated several people for minor injuries caused by panic and evacuation. According to reports from NYPD sources, it has been confirmed that the shooter shot himself during an encounter with police officers, leading them to his self-inflicted gunshot wound death.
Mayor Eric Adams visited the scene and expressed his deepest sympathies to those affected by this tragic act of violence. “Today is an emotionally draining day in New York,” he stated. “We lost an officer who put himself out there to protect others – our thoughts go out to his family as well as everyone affected by such senseless violence.”
This incident has renewed calls for tightened building security and workplace violence prevention measures. City Council members have encouraged commercial property managers to review access control systems and institute threat assessment protocols as soon as possible.
As the tragedy unfolded, local mental health organizations stressed the need for early intervention and support within workplaces. “It’s critical we take threats seriously before they become uncontrollable,” stated Dr. Ellen Cho, trauma psychologist from NYU Langone Medical Center.
Detective Russo is survived by his wife and two young children, as well as an in memoriam candlelight vigil on Wednesday evening at Midtown Precinct South Station.
The NYPD continues to investigate this shooting by reviewing surveillance footage from buildings and speaking with witnesses, with an expected final report expected later this week.
