Over 300 former Israeli officials have signed an unprecedented open letter addressed to former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling upon him to intervene and broker an end to Israel’s conflict in Gaza. This extraordinary move reflects growing concern within Israel’s security and political establishment over this protracted war’s regional and global ramifications.
Signatories to this letter include former generals, intelligence officers, ambassadors and senior government advisors from right-leaning administrations who support strong security policies. Their decision to reach out to Trump — known for his close ties with Israeli leadership during his term in office — represents their belief that he still holds significant influence over both Israeli and regional politics, even now that he no longer holds public office.
“We appeal to you as someone who has always stood with Israel and was instrumental in brokering historic Middle East agreements,” states the letter. “We hope your intervention now can lead to a ceasefire that saves lives while halting further regional escalation and restoring stability.”
This letter references Trump’s role in brokering the 2020 Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations including the UAE and Bahrain. Many signatories credit Trump with altering the diplomatic climate in the region and see his relationship with Arab leaders and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as pivotal to initiating further talks.
Israel’s military operations against Hamas have entered an extended phase, prompting global human rights organizations and UN officials to warn about an impending humanitarian catastrophe. Civilian casualties continue to mount while aid groups report worsening shortages of food, water, and medical supplies within Gaza’s densely populated enclave.
Israel has seen intense public division over this war. While most support the government’s attempts to weaken Hamas, an increasing number of Israelis – especially security veterans – have voiced displeasure with what they perceive to be an uncertain exit strategy and increasing international isolation.
“Israel’s strategic interests and moral standing are at risk if this war drags on for too long without clear political goals,” stated Brig. Gen. (ret.) Yaakov Shalom, one of the signatories. President Trump’s ability to exert pressure regional actors and shape Israeli leadership could make all the difference – his involvement could prove revolutionary.”
Trump has not responded directly to the letter; however, analysts suggest he may see this opportunity to reassert his credentials on foreign policy by initiating new Middle East diplomatic efforts.
Israeli officials remain neutral regarding this letter, though some officials reportedly view it as an attempt to pressure Prime Minister Netanyahu into seeking a negotiated solution. Critics argue that engaging Trump – an often divisive figure in international politics – could compound rather than resolve the situation.
However, the signatories maintain that global diplomatic options have narrowed and the conflict worsening daily; bold steps — including unconventional diplomatic outreach efforts — must be taken quickly to stop bloodshed and pave the path toward peace.
