On Thursday, former U.S. President Donald Trump is set to welcome Edan Alexander, an American-Israeli hostage freed recently from captivity, back into his White House residence, an event which will demonstrate both political and humanitarian aspects of international hostage diplomacy.

Edan Alexander, 20, a dual U.S. and Israeli citizen and Israel Defense Forces soldier was kidnapped by Hamas militants during their October 7, 2023 attacks against southern Israel. Following almost two years in captivity in Gaza and negotiations over ceasefire agreements and hostage exchange deals mediated by international agencies, Alexander was released earlier this week through an exchange deal that included him.

Trump’s team announced Wednesday that Alexander and his family would be welcomed at the White House for a personal meeting with former president. Trump has long championed American hostages held overseas and, more recently, increased his focus on Middle Eastern conflict during his 2024 presidential campaign activities.

“Today marks a proud and emotional moment for our nation,” Trump stated in a short video message. “Edan Alexander has shown great courage through incredible hardship; we welcome him back home with open arms and infinite thanks.

Alexander’s release marks a symbolic victory for families and advocacy groups who have campaigned for his safe return. At least nine Americans were taken hostage during Hamas’s surprise incursion into Israel; U.S. officials have confirmed Alexander appears healthy and will undergo additional medical evaluation and psychological support.

Trump’s choice to host his meeting at the White House–which he still uses for official-looking events despite no longer holding the presidency–has ignited renewed debate over how national symbols may be employed post-presidential political strategy. Yet for many Americans and members of the Jewish community alike, their focus remains squarely on an individual story: one young man’s return from captivity.

“Edan’s safe return is truly miraculous,” stated Sarah Levin of American Hostage Families for Freedom. “We thank all those–government officials, negotiators and activists alike–who made this momentous day possible.”

According to sources involved with the negotiations process, Alexander’s release was part of a prisoner swap agreement coordinated between Qatar, Egypt and the U.S. The Biden administration has refrained from directly commenting on Trump’s involvement but have welcomed Alexander’s return as “an encouraging sign and testament of ongoing efforts to bring American hostages home”.

Trump’s warm reception of Alexander may also serve a political purpose: It could help him court pro-Israel voters and build his foreign policy credentials ahead of the 2024 Republican National Convention. During his presidency, Trump became well known for forging close ties to Israel – including creating the Abraham Accords and moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

As Edan Alexander walks into the White House on Thursday, he not only represents one of the first American hostages released since the 2023 Gaza Crisis but is a powerful symbol of resilience, hope, and the longstanding relationship between America and its citizens abroad.
