North Waziristan, Pakistan — June 28, 2025:
At least 13 security personnel were martyred in a brutal terrorist attack on a security convoy in North Waziristan, a district in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan. The attack, which took place late Friday near the town of Mir Ali, is one of the deadliest assaults on Pakistan’s armed forces in recent months.
According to initial reports from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, a group of heavily armed terrorists ambushed the convoy with automatic weapons and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The ambush resulted in intense crossfire, during which 13 soldiers lost their lives while several others sustained injuries. The wounded personnel were swiftly airlifted to a nearby military hospital for treatment.
Security forces responded to the attack with full force, launching a retaliatory operation in the region. Sources suggest that multiple suspected militants were killed in the ensuing exchange, though official figures have not yet been released.
The area has since been cordoned off, with search operations continuing as security forces hunt for those responsible. Military helicopters were seen hovering over the region on Saturday, and ground troops conducted sweep operations in surrounding villages.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his profound grief over the loss of lives, calling the fallen soldiers “national heroes who laid down their lives in the line of duty.” In a statement, he said, “The nation salutes the courage and sacrifice of our brave sons. We will not rest until terrorism is completely eradicated from our soil.”
President Asif Ali Zardari also condemned the attack and offered condolences to the bereaved families. He reaffirmed the state’s resolve to continue operations against terrorists until peace and stability are restored in the region.
North Waziristan has long been a hotspot for militancy, particularly in the wake of the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan. Although major military operations such as Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad significantly weakened terrorist infrastructure in the area, recent months have seen a resurgence in militant activity, raising concerns over cross-border infiltration and regrouping of banned outfits.
Security analysts have pointed to the deteriorating situation in neighboring Afghanistan as a key factor in the resurgence of militant violence. The porous border and lack of effective governance in the adjacent provinces have allowed terrorist networks to reorganize and launch attacks on Pakistani soil.
The latest incident underscores the continued threats facing Pakistan’s security forces despite years of counter-terrorism efforts. It also renews calls for enhanced border security, intelligence coordination, and regional counterterrorism cooperation.
Funeral prayers for the martyred personnel were held with full military honors, and their bodies were sent to their respective hometowns. The armed forces have reiterated their commitment to eliminating terrorism at all costs.
